YOUNGSTOWN -- Sean A. Bishop, 41, of East Lucius Avenue, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a 2018 aggravated robbery in which detectives were able to use DNA evidence to help solve the crime.
Mahoning County prosecutors are recommending that Bishop get six years in prison when he is sentenced at 10:30 a.m. June 2.
The robbery took place at a home on West Judson Avenue at 10:28 p.m. Dec. 7, 2018.
The victim, 38, said he had gone to his car to remove a bottle of water so it did not freeze, and then was about to re-enter his home, when a man came up from behind him with a gun.
The robber had his hand partially in the doorway. The victim wrestled with the man, resulting in the gun going off two to three times. The robber then entered the home, but the victim was able to disarm the man -- and pistol whipped the robber with his own gun. The suspect ran away.
Officers were able to retrieve the gun and a gray stocking cap the robber had left behind. Officers submitted items from the robbery to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which determined that DNA from the items came back to Bishop.
In September 2019, when the Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force arrested him in the back of a home on Ohio Avenue, a task force member fired and hit Bishop after he tried to run over one of the task force members.
Task force members were arresting Bishop on warrants for felonious assault, robbery and unlawful flight to avoid federal prosecution.
Bishop was taken to a hospital, but none of the agents were injured.
