Live grenade found in Vienna home’s garage

VIENNA — When Timothy Novicky was going through a box in his garage at 618 Niles Vienna Road SE early Wednesday morning, he found a round orange object.

He suspected it had a strange look about it, so he called the Youngstown Bomb Squad, according to Vienna police Chief Bob Ludt, whose department also went to the house.

“The gentleman was cleaning his garage when he found a live hand grenade,” Ludt said. “He called the Youngstown bomb squad, who called us.”

“It was not a pineapple-shaped grenade, but an orange round grenade,” he said. “He wisely reported it.”

Authorities were called around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Ludt said the bomb squad secured the hand grenade in a suppression box and took it away.

“I think everything turned out really well for us,” Ludt said. “It could have been really bad.”

Ludt said the grenade may have been a souvenir that was held by Novicky’s father.

“From what we are told by the homeowner, his father may have acquired it as a souvenir from the Korean War or one of the wars he may have served in,” Ludt said.
