GIRARD -- After a delay last year, a $100,000 project will begin this spring to install sidewalks along roads near the high school for students to use going to and from school.
Safety / Service Director Jerry Lambert said Monday the project involves installation of sidewalks on sections of Gary Avenue, Stull Avenue and Highland Avenue, off Park Avenue, which have no sidewalks for students to use.
"The project was put on the backburner last year. We wanted to get it done in 2020, but with everything that took place with the pandemic and other issues, we have it scheduled for this spring,'' Lambert said
He said the project will begin in mid- to late April, after the chance of freezing-cold weather dissipates.
Lambert said the project is to provide extra safety for the students who currently walk along the sides of the road.
The Ohio Department of Transportation is providing $80,000 in alternative enhancement funds, and the city is contributing $20,000. Foust Construction is scheduled to complete the work.
Another project to begin this month is the $235,000 Wellman Avenue drainage improvement project. Kirila Contractors of Brookfield was selected for the job.
The Ohio Public Works Commission project is scheduled to be completed by June and will be on Wellman Avenue between East Kline and East Liberty streets.
Mayor James Melfi said residents in about 15 homes will need special arrangements so they can access their homes, mail and trash collection services.
Also, Melfi presented a proclamation to the Girard Free Library and its staff for their service to the community, and to celebrate the placement of a microchip stating "Girard Free Library Children's Department" on the Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in February,
Library Director Rose Ann Lubert is retiring Friday after serving 20 years in the position. The interim director will be Colleen Keller, who currently is assistant director.
"It has been an honor and privilege to have served the community for 20 years. I have always said after this was told to me many years ago that the library is the jewel of our community,'' Lubert said.
Melfi said the library and its staff are vital to a successful community, providing materials and services for the residents.
The Girard Library Association was formed in 1919 and evolved into the library which occupies the building at 105 E. Prospect St.
