US air base officials continue to investigate Balint’s death

The investigation into the death of a 34-year-old Hubbard man who was a teacher at a U.S. air base in Japan continues.

The probe is ongoing, according to a news release Wednesday from officials at Yokota Air Base.

The release confirmed the man who was found unresponsive about 11 a.m. Tuesday, Japan time, was Trevor Balint. He was found at a apartment tower unit on the east side of the base.

Balint had been missing since early on Feb. 1 when he was last seen by his wife in their apartment in the same tower unit where his body was found.

Balint was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene, according to the report.

“My sincerest condolences go out to the Balint family and friends both here at Yokota and in the United States,” said Col. Andrew Campbell, commander of the base’s 374th Airlift Wing. “I’m deeply saddened to see the search for Trevor conclude this way.”

The release said Japanese security forces, its office of special investigations and base officials were involved in the search to find Balint. No other details were given into the manner or cause of Balint’s death.

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, said in a release Tuesday he will help Balint’s family get answers for their many questions. “I am devastated at hearing of the death of Trevor Balint. Andrea and my prayers go out to his wife Britni and to their family,” Ryan stated.

Britni Balint and her mother, Denise Mott of Brookfield, were also searching for Balint in the last several days, with friends helping them spread flyers with Trevor’s picture in and around the base.

Mott told the newspaper in an email from Japan that base officials only told them Tuesday that Balint had died and nothing else.

Britni Balint told security she last saw her husband at 1:30 a.m. Feb. 1 at their apartment located near the east gate of the air base. Trevor Balint taught at Mendel Elementary School, which is close to the apartment. He was last seen wearing a gray, short-sleeveg T-shirt. Britni Balint had received a phone call later on Feb. 1 that someone had found Balint’s wallet at a building located on the base. At 5:30 p.m. that day, the wife retrieved the wallet and in a search of the building found his cellphone, keys, jacket, face mask, shoes as well as alcoholic beverage containers. She called security to report Balint missing after coming home from that search.

Ryan and U.S. Sen. Rob Portman last week helped Mott obtain an emergency visa to fly to Japan on Feb. 12 to help and support her daughter.
