Search continues for missing Hubbard man

The search continues for the civilian teacher from Hubbard who has been missing from a U.S. Air Force base in Japan since Feb. 1.

Denise Mott of Brookfield, the mother-in-law of the missing Trevor Balint, traveled to Detroit to receive an emergency visa to travel to Japan. According to the social media site “Find Trevor Balint,” Moss booked a 12-hour flight to Japan, and the site confirmed that Moss was enroute Thursday morning.

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, said he is receiving daily updates of the search from Col. Andrew Campbell, commander of the Yakota Air Base in Japan. Ryan and the office of U.S. Sen. Rob Portman also helped Denise Mott secure the emergency visa from the U.S. State Department, Mott said.

“I am relieved that we were able to assist Ms. Mott with obtaining an emergency visa so she can travel to Japan to support her daughter during this extremely difficult time. I am continuing to closely monitor this situation and remain in close contact with military leadership at Yakota Air Base and the Balint family. As I told the Balint family, I will continue to do everything in my power to help expedite this investigation and hopefully bring a positive resolution to this difficult situation. Andrea and my thoughts and prayers are with their family,” Ryan stated in an email.

Balint’s wife Britni and friends, along with Japanese authorities, have been searching for the 34-year-old man. Reports said the Americans in Japan had posted flyers on and around the air base, but the social media site showed that the posting of flyers was stopped since it was determined that practice was illegal without permission of the local municipality in Japan.

The social media site stated the flyers that were already posted remained. The flyers were printed with words in both English and Japanese.

A later posting stated the flyers would be transferred to Twitter accounts.

In a video posted to the social media site, Britni Balint told security she last saw her husband at 1:30 a.m. at their apartment located at the east side of the air base. Trevor Balint taught at Mendel Elementary School, which is close to the apartment.

He was last seen wearing a gray short-sleeve T-shirt. Britni Balint had received a phone call later on Feb. 1 that someone had found Balint’s wallet at a building located on the base. At 5:30 p.m. that day, she retrieved the wallet and in a search of the building found Trevor’s cellphone, keys, jacket, face mask and shoes, as well as alcoholic beverage containers. She called security to report Balint missing after coming home from that search.
