Man shot over weekend in Campbell

CAMPBELL — Investigators are still piecing together facts in a shooting over the weekend that left a man hospitalized.

Police said they were sent at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday for loud noises in the area of Papa’s Puerto Rican Cuisine on 12th Street.

Officers arrived but did not see anything. A few minutes later, an officer saw two people in the roadway at Hyatt Road and 12th Street, with another man who was appearing to resist them.

As an officer approached, two men fled, running west on Whipple Avenue. That’s when the officer noticed the third man face down in the road with blood on his clothes.

Officers then began questioning people at Papa’s Puerto Rican Cuisine, but “many of the people at the restaurant didn’t speak English,” said Lt. Kevin Sferra on Monday.

A woman pointed to a white Jeep Wrangler as it left the area as she spoke with an officer, the report states. She also made a gesture of a gun when she was asked what happened.

When a concerned citizen stopped near the scene to help translate, “people in the area did not cooperate,” police said.

Officers were able to gather, however, that the woman is the victim’s brother.

While searching the area, officers found shell casings.

An employee with Papa’s on Monday said that there was no shooting inside the restaurant.

The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Sferra said. “We’re waiting to talk to him to see what he can tell us,” Sferra said
