Man faces federal charge in bank robbery

WARREN — A man jailed in the Feb. 2 robbery at the TCF bank in the Warren Plaza, 2001 Elm Road NE, now faces a federal charge.

Patrick Marsh, 38, who gave authorities a Hubbard address but now lives in Niles, was charged this week in the U.S. Court Northern Ohio District with bank robbery.

He was arraigned Friday on state charges via video hookup from the Trumbull County jail before Warren Municipal Judge Thomas Gysegem. Jail records show Marsh remains incarcerated here in Warren.

Marsh is expected to appear for an arraignment via a video hookup with the Youngstown court on the federal charge at 10 a.m. Feb. 19 before Magistrate Judge Carmen E. Henderson.

Court records show the federal robbery charge against Marsh was unsealed Tuesday after an investigation by Bryon J. Speaks, special agent for the FBI office in Youngstown. The affidavit credits the quick work of Warren police Detective Frank Tempesta for helping to solve the case.

Minutes after the robbery, the affidavit states, Tempesta reviewed archived closed circuit footage of the robbery. Tempesta placed some still images from the footage on social media and sought assistance from the public to identify the robber.

Tempesta later that day received a tip leading to Marsh. The tipster showed that Marsh was previously convicted of a bank robbery in Niles and is employed with a construction firm in Niles.

Court records showed Marsh was sentenced to a year in prison on charges in connection to the robbery in Niles on Jan. 20, 2017.

Last Thursday, agents staked out Marsh’s home on Fenton Street in Niles, and found in his garbage can similar items that were worn by the bank robber. They also saw Marsh in his utility truck, similar to the one driven by the robber, the affidavit states.

Officers with the Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes task force later executed a search of the home and found the Nike-branded hooded sweatshirt and a black stocking cap, each similar to those worn by the robber.

The affidavit states Speaks and Warren Detective John Dina later interviewed March, who confessed to the robbery because he had financial difficulties. Marsh was taken into custody shortly after 6:30 p.m. Feb. 4, Trumbull County jail records state.

TCF Bank, 2001 Elm Road NE, was robbed of $740 at 3:40 p.m. Feb. 2 by a heavy-set male wearing a white-hooded sweatshirt, according to police reports.

The robber’s sweatshirt had the Nike “swoosh” on the front side. A black winter cap covered his ears, and he wore a blue surgical mask, blue jeans and brown shoes, a police report states.

The man presented the bank teller a note that stated: “Give me the money now, so I don’t have to use my gun.”

Opening up the cash drawer, the teller showed him there was no money in it. The teller managed to trigger the bank’s silent alarm while opening the till drawer, the report states. After going to the next window, the teller walked slowly to the drive-thru window to collect cash from that drawer.

Once he was handed the cash, the robber ran out the door and turned left toward the Giant Eagle plaza.
