The Ohio Department of Health reported 2,138 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, which is about half the 21-day average of 4,451. Even more significant is the state reported just seven new deaths between Saturday and Sunday, which is about one-tenth the 21-day average of 69.
No new deaths were reported locally.
On Sunday, there were 920,217 total cases statewide, with 11,659 deaths. As for hospitalizations, 61 more people were hospitalized in the last 24 hours -- much lower than the 21-day average of 207 hospitalizations.
Trumbull County now has 13,543 total cases with 332 deaths. Mahoning County now has 18,470 total cases with deaths holding at 342. Columbiana County now has 7,755 cases with total deaths remaining at 132.
Also this weekend, Ohio went over the 1 million mark for people receiving at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination with 31,824 more people vaccinated since Saturday's report for a total of 1,037, 509. As of Sunday, 8.8 percent of the state's population had at least one dose of the vaccine.
Mahoning County crossed the 10 percent threshold for people vaccinated on Sunday at 10.07 percent (23,030 people). Trumbull County increased its vaccination total slightly at 8.91 percent (17,639 people), while Columbiana County's vaccination total was about the same at 8.48 percent (8,643 people).
This week, the vaccine will be given to those 65 and up. Gov. Mike DeWine said the state will hold at this age group for a few weeks. He said at some point vaccines will be given to those below 65, but he can't set a date on that now.
DeWine said officials are starting to see a significant drop in cases after the vaccination of nursing homes started occurring.
