YOUNGSTOWN -- Erick A. Smith, 40, of Salt Springs Road, was placed on three years of probation Monday after paying $1,500 in restitution to the Boardman Police Department.
The probation is for an incident last April in which Smith threatened a person in Boardman. No one was injured.
In December, Smith pleaded guilty before Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to attempted intimidation and obstructing official business, both felonies. The judge ordered Smith to continue with psychiatric treatment.
Boardman police said they responded to a home on Beechwood Drive regarding Smith breaking glass at a vacant home. Smith is alleged to have told someone living nearby, "I'll get rid of you." A police report at the time indicated Smith fired three shots from inside his house.
But Assistant Prosecutor Mike Rich said Monday there is no evidence Smith fired a weapon.
Boardman police ordered Smith out of the house but he did not cooperate, so investigators called a negotiator to assist. Eventually, Smith's girlfriend and daughter exited the residence. Nearby homes were evacuated. Smith eventually surrendered. Officers noticed "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" on Smith.
