WARREN — A Youngstown man was given an indefinite sentence of four-to-five-and-a-half-years for a conviction in a July 9, 2020, shooting at a Willard Street NE home in Warren.

Longino Roman Jr., 40, of 1554 Cascade Drive, Youngstown, pleaded guilty to three counts of felonious assault, one count of improper discharge of a firearm into a habitation and one count of having a weapon as a convicted felon. The assault and firearm charges carried firearm specifications that added one mandatory year of prison to Roman’s sentence, court officials said.

Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice questioned the defendant about why he would shoot into a home, and Roman replied that he was reacting when he saw one of the inhabitants carry a firearm.

“I just reacted,” Roman said. “I could have acted differently, but now I am at the mercy of the court.”

The terms of the plea arrangement between defense attorney David Rouzzo and prosecutors called for a four-year prison sentence.

Roman was arrested on July 27, 2020, by marshals at a Detroit Avenue home in Youngstown, after being included on the area’s federal Top 5 Most Wanted list.

According to Warren police reports, officers answered a call about a shooting just before 5:30 a.m. July 9 in the 200 block of Willard Street NE. A silver truck had taken off from the scene possibly headed toward Youngstown, a caller to 911 stated.

Police found multiple rounds were shot into the home. The three people in the home, which included a 14-year-old female, were not injured in the shooting.

Longino said one of the people in the home was carrying his baby.

“(The incident) was an unfortunate set of circumstances that I got tied into,” Roman said to the prosecutor and his defense attorney prior to the plea hearing.
