Nursing homes in Trumbull report 16 more fatalities

COVID-19 deaths at Trumbull County nursing homes and assisted living facilities rose by 16 this week, continuing the high number of deaths that have been recorded in the county in the past three weeks.

The number of deaths rose from 87 to 100 two weeks ago (up 13), from 100 to 121 last week (up 21) and from 121 to 137 this week (up 16). That adds up to 50 additional Trumbull County nursing home deaths in the last three weeks, according to Ohio Department of Health data.

The state does not report which nursing homes and assisted living facilities had deaths each week, only a total for each county.

Mahoning County’s number of nursing home deaths (204) rose by one this week. Columbiana County nursing home deaths stayed the same at 66.

The number of Trumbull County nursing homes and assisted living facilities with three or more virus cases dropped from eight to seven.

The number of Mahoning County nursing homes with three or more cases rose from six to 10, and Columbiana County had two facilities with at least three virus cases last week but has one this week.

Among the biggest changes at specific long-term care facilities was the drop in patient cases at Washington Square Healthcare nursing home in Warren. It had 24 patient cases last week but has none this week. It had five staff cases last week but has four this week.

As a state, patient virus cases dropped for a second week. Patient cases were 3,794 this week compared to 4,317 last week. The number of staff cases also fell — from 2,772 last week to 2,432 this week.

The number of staff cases at the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown rose from 24 to 32. Inmate cases rose from 22 to 29.

The number of staff cases at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown rose from 10 to 15. Inmate cases rose from four to eight.

The number of staff cases of the virus at Trumbull Correctional Instititution in Leavittsburg dropped this week from 18 to 13, and inmate cases dropped from six to three.
