Girard man pleads to 2 OVIs

WARREN — A Girard man pleaded guilty to three charges — including two OVIs — in connection with a June 4, 2020, accident on Belmont Avenue in Liberty.

Aaron B. Cousin, 53, of 14 Holly Drive, Apt. 15B, appeared with his attorney Brendan Keating before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Andrew D. Logan, who will sentence Cousin after a background report is compiled by the adult probation department. Cousin was convicted of the two charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, fourth-degree felonies, plus a charge of failure to stop after an accident.

Cousin could face up to 36 months in prison and a potential lifetime suspension of his driving privileges. As part of the conviction, Cousin will have to forfeit his 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was involved in the accident.

According to the court record, Cousin had three other OVI convictions in Girard Municipal Court — on Feb. 6, 2013, April 16, 2014 and July 20, 2016, — which led to the felony charges.

About 5:30 p.m. June 4, 2020, Liberty police were called to investigate a two-vehicle accident involving the Chrysler and a Lincoln on Belmont Avenue between the Giant Eagle Plaza and Tibbetts Wick Road.

One car went off the road and was smoking, according to the report. Police were looking for one of the drivers, dressed in black, who was seen running west from the scene. That driver, the report states, later was identified as Cousin, and he later was found by police walking in a field along the tree line off Naylor Lloyd Road. Police officers said the man appeared to have glossy eyes, and they detected an odor of alcohol.

After being placed into custody, the report states, Cousin was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to be checked out, and he refused to take a blood alcohol test.

Trumbull County jail records show Cousin has been free after posting a $7,500 bond on July 17.
