Austintown man jailed after fight

AUSTINTOWN — A 21-year-old township man is in Mahoning County jail following a Sunday argument and fight.

Marquis Barbel Jr., of 4232 Nottingham Ave., is charged with felonious assault and domestic violence.

According to a police report, one of the victims had found marijuana in Barbel’s bedroom and confronted him about it. Barbe became upset and argumentive when asked to leave the residence.

The argument continued and Barbel swung to hit a woman, but she ducked and the punch didn’t land. She did, however, hit her head while ducking.

Another woman attempted to break it up the fight, but she was hit, the report states.

“… During the altercation, her and Marquis began to fight and he punched her in the mouth, causing her two front teeth to fracture and a severe laceration to the front of her bottom lip,” it states.

The report also states the victim lost consciousness at one point. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital where her front teeth were wired in an attempt to save them. Her bottom lip was stitched also.

The first victim advised officers that Barbel was staying at the Motel 6 in Liberty Township. With help from the Liberty Police Department, Barbel Jr. was arrested without incident on the charges.

During his arrest, he said the first woman attacked him and attempted to kick him out of the house, the report states. He also said the second woman tried to fight him as well, hitting him several times. He then swung at her, the report states.

Barbel is being held in lieu of $14,500 bond and is set to appear Jan. 27 before Judge Scott Hunter in Austintown.
