1 driver dies in wrong-way crash

YOUNGSTOWN — A 5:40 a.m. Thursday three-vehicle crash on the Madison Avenue Expressway killed one person and closed the eastbound lanes for several hours.

The Youngstown Police Department reported that a black Honda Civic entered the eastbound lane going the wrong direction from the McGuffey Road exit and struck a Ford F-150 pickup truck head-on near the Elm Street overpass.

The collision caused the Ford to strike a white Oldsmobile Delta 88.

The driver of the Honda was found dead at the scene by responding police officers. The identities of the drivers are not being released at this time, nor any other information, such as whether there were any other injuries.

The pickup truck appeared to have been on fire and was removed about 10:10 a.m., just before city workers removed the cones blocking the eastbound lanes of the highway and reopened the road to normal traffic.

The Madison Avenue Expressway also is known as U.S. Route 422 and is one of the routes being recommended by the Ohio Department of Transportation as a detour route for traffic unable to use a portion of Interstate 680 because of a crash Monday near the Glenwood Avenue exit.
