Youngstown woman dies in crash on Route 585
CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP — A Youngstown woman died Tuesday in Wayne County in a multiple-car crash that is still under investigation.
Karlene Rantamaki, 34, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu on state Route 585 in Chippewa Township when the crash occured at 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Rantamaki was traveling south on Route 585 when she drove left of center, sideswiping two vehicles driven by Terry Barnes of Akron and Adam Graham, also of Akron, the patrol report states.
Her vehicle then slid sideways across the center line and Rantamaki was struck by a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Michael Zimmerman of Cross Junction, Va.
Rantamaki was pronounced dead at the scene, while Zimmerman and his wife Aigbail were transported to Akron General Hospital, and their son to Akron Children’s Hospital.
Barnes and Graham were not injured in the crash.
Investigators do not suspect alcohol to be a factor in the crash and all drivers and passengers were wearing their seatbelts, the patrol report states.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Reconstruction Unit, along with Wayne County Coroner’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted at the crash scene.
