Youngstown man facing federal gun charge

WARREN — A Youngstown man who had a Taser used on him after running from a Warren police traffic stop in late October faces a gun charge in U.S. District Court for Northern Ohio.

Jermaine McCree, 44, of 2418 Wydesteel Ave., Youngstown, appeared by video arraignment before Magistrate Judge Jonathan D. Greenberg on a charge of having a weapon as a felon. The federal docket shows that McCree pleaded not guilty to the charge and remains in federal custody.

The case was assigned to federal Judge Christopher A. Boyko of Cleveland, who has not set another hearing.

According to federal documents, the federal charge stems from the Oct. 28 incident in Warren that began in the parking lot of the Hamphsire House on Fifth Street SW.

McCree ran from the rear passenger seat of a Chevrolet Tahoe that was stopped by officers while a school bus was in the area distributing meals to children at the Hampshire House apartments.

Officers, who noticed the man had a gun in a waistband, chased him through the complex parking lot and used a Taser on him as he climbed a fence, according to a police report.

Court records also show McCree was wanted by Youngstown Municipal Court on an escape and possession of cocaine warrant.

A docket entry on Nov. 4 in Warren Municipal Court showed that possession of marijuana and having a weapon as a felon charges were dismissed so that the federal case against McCree could proceed.

Trumbull County jail records show that McCree was released into federal custody shortly before 5 p.m. Nov. 4.
