Woman accused in past assault
Arraigned after husband died two years ago
YOUNGSTOWN — A 34-year-old Streetsboro woman was arraigned Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in a two-year-old felonious assault case.
Elizabeth Clausen, of 9226 Briar Drive, pleaded not guilty by video hookup between the jail and the courtroom, to a felonious assault charge, a second-degree felony that carries a maximum eight-year prison term.
Clausen is accused of striking her husband on the head on June 8, 2018, when they both lived in the 2100 block of Innwood Drive in Austintown. Prosecutors said the husband, Eric James Clausen Jr., 35, an Air Force veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan, died June 10, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
A Mahoning County Coroner’s report showed that Eric Clausen died of pneumonia, but according to Mahoning County assistant Prosecutor Michael Yaccovone, his office proceeded with the assault case against the wife after a series of interviews with the defendant, friends and relatives.
Yaccovone said the husband was struck with a blunt object and the defendant had given authorities several different versions of what happened.
Elizabeth Clausen, who was arrested Monday in Portage County, is now being held in Mahoning County jail pending the posting of a $50,000 bond.
Louis DeFabio has been appointed as Clausen’s attorney. A jury trial is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. March 1, 2020.
Yacavone said he does not expect additional charges to be filed against her.
