Vehicle break-ins reported in Poland this past week

POLAND — Police in Poland are urging people to lock their cars after a recent rash of break-ins have been reported.

It appears the break-ins have were largely over this past weekend with another wave Tuesday night, said Sgt. Dan Aracich of the Poland Township police department.

The break-ins have been reported on Algonquin Drive, Diana Drive and Duncan Drive, north of U.S. Route 224.

Many of the reports have been of loose change, with one report of a purse with credit cards and money stolen, Aracich said.

While vehicle thefts happen year-round, Aracich said there tends to be more instances around the holidays and in the summer.

“It’s a crime of opportunity,” he said, noting it’s rare that suspects break windows to gain entry to vehicles. “People look for unlocked cars. They want an easy in and an easy out.”

He suggests people lock their vehicles and take valuables into the house. If items are left in a car out of necessity, Aracich said to hide them out of sight.

There are no suspects and police have asked for anyone with home surveillance footage to contact the Poland police department at 330-757-1549.
