Trumbull sees spike in nursing home cases

Numbers remain high in Mahoning

The number of COVID-19 cases spiked at Trumbull County nursing homes and assisted-living facilities this week, while Mahoning County saw continued high numbers.

Columbiana County facilites saw little change.

Area long-term-care facilities such as nursing homes have been on an upswing in cases for several weeks.

That continued this week for Mahoning County facilities. After 14 facilities had at least three patient or staff cases last week, there were 17 such facilities this week.

Ivy Woods Manor nursing home in North Lima, however, had 36 patient cases and four staff cases last week but now has zero patient cases and two staff cases, according to the Ohio Department of Health website.

The big increase was in Trumbull County, which had three facilities with at least three patient and staff cases last week but has nine such facilities this week.

Continuing Healthcare at the Ridge nursing home in Mineral Ridge was not on the list last week but this week has 23 patient cases and three staff cases.

Lake Vista nursing home in Cortland saw an increase of 15 staff members with the virus this week. It has four patient cases and now 21 staff cases.

As a state, patient cases rose again this week compared to last week. Patient cases were at 3,439 last week and are at 4,096 this week. The number of staff cases also rose — from 2,556 last week to 2,907 this week.

Deaths at area nursing homes and assisted-living facilities rose this week. Mahoning has 202 deaths, up one from last week. Trumbull County has 80 deaths, up one. And Columbiana County has 59 deaths, up two.

The Ohio Department of Health says deaths at long-term-care facilities such as nursing homes have made up 80 percent of the total COVID-19 deaths in Mahoning County since April 15. Only five other counties in the state have a higher percentage.

The percentage is 59 for Trumbull County, 65.6 for Columbiana County.

The number of virus cases at Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg dropped this week from six to two. But the state announced that TCI corrections officer Mark Jones died from the virus. In all of Ohio’s prisons, seven staff members have died.

The number inmates at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown with the virus continued to be zero this week. No staff members have died at that facility from the virus.
