Grand jury dismisses six charges linked to shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has declined to indict a man in an Oct. 5 shooting death in Campbell.

Charles Jennings, 28, was arrested on a murder charge after police found Quincy Little, 27, shot to death inside a car outside 30 Woodland Ave. around 2 a.m. Police at the time said Jennings was the new boyfriend of Little’s ex-girlfriend. Little and the woman dated on and off for about nine years and had several children together, police said.

Investigators said Little came to the woman’s home to confront Jennings and a fight that began in the garage escalated into the shooting. Jennings’ attorney, Jerry Ingram, said at the time that Jennings shot Little in self-defense.

Mike Yacovone, assistant county prosecutor said the grand jury declined to indict Jennings on any of the six charges Yacovone presented — two types of murder charge, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault and aggravated assault.

Yacovone noted that he is not in the room when the grand jury decides whether it will indict someone, but he believes the reason they chose not to indict Jennings was they believed he acted in self-defense.

Jennings admitted that he killed Little, Yacovone said.

Jennings already had been released from the Mahoning County Jail Wednesday evening, according to jail records.
