YOUNGSTOWN — Latonya Cliff, 38, of Cleveland pleaded guilty Tuesday to supplying the drugs that killed an inmate at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Dec. 15, 2018.
The inmate, Perez Worley, 28, was in prison for the 2014 East Cleveland shooting death of another man.
Prosecutors say Cliff brought eight balloons filled with methamphetamine to Worley. One of them opened up inside of Worley, causing an overdose and his death.
She pleaded guilty Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to involuntary manslaughter and illegal conveyance of drugs of abuse onto grounds of a specified governmental facility.
Prosecutors agreed to dismiss several other charges in exchange for her plea. Kevin Day, assistant prosecutor, said prosecutors are recommending Cliff get four years in prison.
Prosecutors, however, will not oppose Cliff getting judicial release after serving 18 months in prison. She will be sentenced at 11 a.m. Jan. 13.
Judge John Durkin told Cliff he is “very familiar with the case” and will sentence Cliff in the manner recommended as long “you stay out of trouble and appear for sentencing.”
A person can be charged with involuntary manslaughter if someone dies when he or she is committing a felony, prosecutors have said. The two charges to which Cliff pleaded guilty are both felonies.
The involuntary manslaughter could carry as much as 11 years in prison. The other charge carries a penalty of up to three years in prison.
Worley was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 28 years in 2015 for the 2014 East Cleveland shooting death of Jonathan Hansard, 23, according to Cleveland.com.
