YOUNGSTOWN — A family member said 15 dogs and 11 cats died in a fire at 220 Pasadena Ave. on the South Side Wednesday morning.

A woman and her daughter escaped relatively unharmed, while the two-story home was severely damaged.

Lt. Jeff Goodlet of the Youngstown Fire Department said fire was coming from the first and second floor and attic when firefighters arrived. The blaze was reported about 9 a.m.

Firefighters rescued two dogs and two cats, but they did not survive, Goodlet said.

Frank Carswell of Youngstown, who said he is related to the homeowner, said 15 dogs were in the home along with 11 cats, many of them puppies and kittens, and all apparently died.

He said the homeowner suffered “flash burns” on her face, and her daughter inhaled some smoke. Fire officials said they believed the women were not injured.

The women had lived at the house about seven years, Carswell said.

Goodlet referred questions about the amount of damage to the house and the cause of the fire to Kurt Wright, fire investigator, but he said the first and second floors, basement and attic were damaged. The first floor appeared to be destroyed.

Carswell said it is apparent that propane heaters in the house were the reason for the fire.

Goodlet confirmed there were a handful of propane tanks in the house.
