3rd teen escapee arrested Thursday

YOUNGSTOWN — The last of three teens who escaped from the Juvenile Justice Center on Nov. 15 was arrested Thursday evening by the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force Youngstown Division and the Youngstown Police Department.

Edward J. Thomas Jr., 15, was arrested on East Warren Avenue in Youngstown without incident, a news release from the task force states. Police recovered a 9mm handgun and ammunition during Thomas’ arrest, police said.

Thomas and two other boys — Brandon Crump Jr. and DeShawn Douglas, both 17, — overtook a guard, ran to an outdoor courtyard and scaled the fence, and two ran away from the facility, according to officials. Crump was apprehended inside the fenced area and Douglas was arrested the following day near the WRTA bus station downtown.

Thomas was at the JJC on charges of discharging a firearm into a habitation with a gun specification. He likely will face an additional charge of escape.
