West Side man faces charges in federal case

YOUNGSTOWN — A Youngstown man got a continuance of his federal case linked to an ongoing drug investigation in the Mahoning Valley.

During a video hearing in U.S. Northern District Court of Ohio on Thursday, the attorney for Jarrell D. Martin, 32, of 21 S. Dunlap Ave., sought a waiver of his client’s speedy trial rights.

According to court documents, attorney Sam Amendolara said the complications of the case require more time for him to prepare.

The court complied with the motion, the record shows, and canceled Martin’s scheduled Nov. 30 trial.

A new pretrial hearing has been set for 11 a.m. Feb. 18, 2021.

Martin is accused of knowingly and intentionally manufacturing, distributing or possessing with intent to manufacture, or distribute a controlled substance.

According to an affidavit filed by a task force officer with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a source told investigators in March 2018 that Martin was selling cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin on the West Side of Youngstown. In April 2019, another source told police that Martin was selling drugs at his home on South Dunlap Avenue, the document states.

Investigators then gave the two sources money to make several controlled drug purchases from Martin on Mahoning Avenue and Indianola Avenue between May 2018 and Jan. 15, 2020, the affidavit states.

Earlier this year, Martin was among a host of people named in a 39-count indictment out of U.S. Northern District Court of Ohio dealing with distribution of methamphetamine, methoxyacetyl, fentanyl, carfentanil, heroin and cocaine, and illegal firearms possession.
