The Mahoning Valley added more cases in one day than ever before Friday, reaching nearly 650 new cases.

In the past week, Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties have counted 2,787 new cases of COVID-19.

The state reported 8,808 new cases Friday, but the report is incomplete, because thousands of reports are still pending review, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

The state’s 21-day-long 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew began Thursday, with exceptions for work and trips to get necessary food, medical care, social services or providing care for others.

The public health order is meant as a “slowdown” instead of a shutdown, according to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

“As COVID-19 continues to spread in Ohio, we need a stronger response to minimize the impact on Ohio’s health care and hospital capacity and ensure health care is available to those that need it,” DeWine said. “With this order we are discouraging get-togethers and gatherings to minimize the spread of the virus while minimizing the economic impact of a complete shutdown.”

Mahoning County cases increased by 318, putting the total at 6,459 since the pandemic began; Trumbull County added 216 cases, increasing the total to 4,682; and Columbiana County added 113 cases, for a total of 3,165 since the pandemic began.

The rate of cases per 100,000 people in Trumbull County is 575.83, according to the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. The rate was just over 117 at the end of October.

The rate is at 561.91 in Mahoning County; at the end of October, the rate was 139.06.

In Columbiana County, which went red Thursday, the rate increased from 116.8 per 100,000 people at the end of October, to 513.33 on Thursday, according to the advisory system.

All three counties are now at the red Level 3 of “very high spread.” The state Thursday added its first purple Level 4 county, Franklin County. Level 4 indicates “severe exposure and spread,” according to the advisory system.

Trumbull County has met the advisory system’s indicator levels for cases per capita, case increases, emergency room visits, outpatient visits and cases in non-congregate settings. The county has not triggered the indicators for hospital admissions and ICU capacity.

Mahoning and Columbiana counties met the same indicators, except the indicator for outpatient visits.

On Tuesday, the seven-day average for emergency room visits was 12.4 in Columbiana County, 22 in Mahoning County and 21.1 in Trumbull County.

On Tuesday, the seven-day average for outpatient visits was 5.7 in Columbiana County, 29.3 in Mahoning County and 20.6 in Trumbull County. Mahoning County had a recent high of about 114 average daily outpatient visits on Nov. 1.

One new death was reported in Trumbull and in Mahoning counties on Friday. The total number of deaths in Mahoning County has been 299, and in Trumbull County, 143, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
