YOUNGSTOWN — Sharon L. Conti Sattler, 55, of West Omar Street in Struthers, was sentenced to three years of probation Friday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for her role in a potentially catastrophic incident in 2019.

Police said Conti Sattler was living with her mother on Creed Street in Struthers on Feb. 24, 2019, when Conti Sattler’s mother called 911, saying her daughter was suicidal. She said she believed Conti Sattler had opened a gas line in the house.

When police arrived, there was an overwhelming smell of gas, police said. Police requested the fire department and turned off their radios to avoid the potential for them to spark an explosion, a police report states.

They found Conti Sattler’s mother in a back room. She appeared to be confused and disoriented. Police removed her from the house, the report states.

Police evacuated the area and found Conti Sattler in the basement. Conti Sattler’s son-in-law told police he was a plumber and could turn off the gas in order to save Conti Sattler and head off a “catastrophic explosion that would have definitely put the neighborhood in jeopardy,” a police report states.

Police found Conti Sattler in a fetal position and not moving near a clothes dryer that was pulled from the wall and the gas line was detached from the wall, spewing gas into the air.

As her son-in-law passed by her, she flipped onto her back and lunged her body at him, kicking and punching him.

An officer identified himself, and Conti Sattler began to kick him. The officer kept her away from her son-in-law, who was trying to turn off the gas. The officer pinned the woman to the floor, the report states.

Her son-in-law heard the furnace ignite, so he raced to it to turn it off.

With a second officer in the basement, police escorted Conti Sattler up the stairs and outside, but she continued to fight. Officers told her they were trying to save her life, but she said, “I don’t want to live.”

Conti Sattler’s mother told police Conti Sattler became angry that day because her mother would not give her money. Conti Sattler told her mother she was going to “kill herself and take her (her mother) out with her,” the report states.

After that, Conti Sattler went downstairs and locked the door, her mother told police. That’s when her mother started to smell gas.

Conti Sattler pleaded guilty to arson in May 2019 and was accepted into the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court mental health court.

She was negatively terminated from the mental health court in August, and her bond was revoked. She has been in the Mahoning County jail since then.

Before sentencing by Judge Maureen Sweeney, Conti Sattler apologized and told the judge she “messed up,” adding that “being in jail has put a lot of things in perspective.”

Judge Sweeney ordered Conti Sattler to engage in mental health counseling. If she is not successful on probation, she could go to prison for up to 18 months, the judge said.
