Schiavoni to be sworn in as judge today

CANFIELD — Joe Schiavoni will be sworn in at 6 p.m. today as a Mahoning County Court judge at a ceremony at the county court on North Broad Street in Canfield.

Jennifer Brunner, an Ohio Supreme Court justice-elect, will preside over the event.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony is closed to the public.

Schiavoni will take the bench at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the county court in Sebring.

Schiavoni, a former state senator, defeated J.P. Morgan 58 percent to 42 percent in the recent election. The results were certified last week.

Schiavoni will serve the rest of an unexpired term and is up for re-election in 2022. He’s being sworn in now because Morgan’s appointment to the bench ended with the election.

Morgan had been appointed in March 2019 to fill the term until this election. David D’Apolito, who was elected to a six-year term on the county court bench in 2016, left in February 2019 after winning a seat on the 7th District Court of Appeals.
