Local Scout earns Eagle for display case

CANFIELD — John Michael Heino’s Eagle Scout project involved planning, designing and constructing a display case / book stand for the city.

The project will hold historic documents, records and artifacts such as the Tree City award plaques.

“I came up with the idea of the display case after talking to Mayor (Richard) Duffett and Wade Calhoun, the city manager,” Heino, 17, said. “I received a list of a few projects for the city, and I decided on the display case.”

The project began in 2019 and took less than a year to complete. He got funding from family friends and from Cornersburg and Western Reserve Sparkle markets, Youngstown Mirror and Glass, and Bermann’s Electric in Boardman.

The Eagle Challenge was presented by Donald A. Duda, Eagle Scout and Troop 25 assistant Scoutmaster.

“I built it in one of our Scout leaders’ personal wood shop,” Heino said. “Throughout the course of the project, I had around 10 people that included Scouts, Scout leaders, family and friends helping under my guidance.”

Heino is the son of John T. and Suzanne Heino of Canfield. He received his Eagle Award during a Court of Honor at Camp Stambaugh on Sept. 30. John became the 184th Eagle Scout for Troop 25, chartered to the Canfield United Methodist Church.

He delivered the finalized project to city hall on Feb. 21, just weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown.

“It has been placed in the entrance to city council chambers and will be used to display items of significance for the city of Canfield,” Calhoun said.

Heino began as a Cub Scout in 2009 and moved up to Boy Scout Troop 25 in 2015.

He’s earned 33 merit badges, as well as earning the Stambaugh Triangle Award, Seven Ranges Fifth Year Pipestone Holder, the Mile Swim Award, the Arrow of Light Award, the Duty to God Award and the Gettysburg Historic Hike Award. He also is the recipient of the Troop 25 Herman West Most Active Scout Award in 2016-2019, the recipient of the Jimmy Jones Outstanding Scout Award in 2017 and 2019, and the Bob Roberts Memorial Backpatch Award with seven points.

Outside Scouting, Heino is a junior at Canfield High School, where he is a three-year trumpet player in the CHS Symphonic Band and is a member of the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra. He also is a member of the CHS track and field team, Canfield Robotics Team 4601, and is a recipient of the Kenneth A. Reel Citizenship Award.
