Federal case may head to plea deal

Niles man accused of threats through use of social media

YOUNGSTOWN — A Niles man accused of using social media to threaten a family may be nearing a plea deal with federal prosecutors.

Court records show that the attorney for Caleb Hall, 25, of Niles, was in a teleconference Nov. 18 with prosecutors and made a motion to continue the case for about 30 days to review any plea offer with his client.

Hall was indicted Sept. 24 on one count of interstate communication of threats. Another teleconference is set for 3:30 p.m. Dec. 16 before Magistrate Judge Carmen E. Henderson, court records show.

Hall, who was arrested Sept. 4 on an FBI complaint, has been free after posting a $20,000 bond, court records show.

According to an FBI affidavit, two people posted comments about a Feb. 9, 2020, shooting in Youngstown and received the following threats over social media:

“… hide your family you (expletive) slob. That (expletive) in your profile is going with you … How’s that … When that (expletive) dumps you, she’ll be at my house before you even get out of the hospital. God I would (sic) to spray his whole family down with an AR. I hope I see this little boy with his family in the park someday. Teach him the lesson he never got from his parents.”

A woman also found the following message on her social media:

“Hide you husband, you ugly (expletive). Here I come.”

A federal grand jury sought phone records and traced the threats to a cellphone owned by and registered to Hall, the complaint states.

The FBI complaint does not name the victims, only using initials.

Alvaro L. DeCola of Akron, attorney for Hall, has had no comment on the case.
