“Surface,” a one-wall exhibition at Youngstown State University, is on display in Bliss Hall’s Judith Rae Solomon Gallery.

The exhibit features paintings installed on one wall, visible only through the glass doors of the gallery to create a safe viewing area for patrons.

Joy Christiansen Erb, chair of the art department, said, “We are eager to continue to showcase artwork to the community working within restrictions due to COVID-19. By having a series of one-wall exhibitions, we can utilize the beautiful Judith Rae Solomon Gallery in a new way. This allows patrons to safely view art exhibitions through the glass doors of the gallery.”

The exhibition features a selection of paintings from the project “Surface” in Professor Dragana Crnjak’s Introduction to Painting class. Art students are introduced to different painting methodologies with two main objectives: to explore a variety of tools and surface qualities in painting as well as to examine the ways that surface handling affects the subject matter and development of content in painting.

Students whose work is displayed are Emily Stonestreet, McDonald; Naihomy Lebron, Youngstown; Derrick Brubacher, Boardman; Dylan Hawk, Pittsburgh; Elijah Duponty, Youngstown; Nicholas Helco, McDonald; Natalie Walk, Warren; Basha Guthrie, Miami, Fla.; and Rose Williams, Farrell, Pa.

Bliss Hall is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and “Surface” will be on display through Oct. 30. Masks are required in all areas of Bliss Hall.
