Youngstown shooting victims identified

YOUNGSTOWN– The Mahoning County Coroner’s office has identified the man shot to death Saturday in the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue on the South Side as Juwuan Howell, 22.

Police were called there for a shooting at 4:03 p.m. and found a crime scene. Howell had already been taken by private vehicle to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. He died a short time later, police said.

The coroner’s office also identified James Johnson, 20, as the man shot to death early Oct. 9 in the double-digit block of East Evergreen Avenue.

Police were called there at 12:53 a.m. regarding gunfire. Police found Johnson’s body in a vacant lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to St. Elizabeth with a gunshot wound, but died later, police said.

Johnson was not identified right away, police said. An autopsy was conducted, and the case remains under investigation by the Youngstown Police Department.

If the deaths are ruled homicides, they would be the 23rd and 24th of the year. The city had 20 in all of 2019.
