Valley bucks state trend, sees fewer institutional virus cases

After having 48 COVID-19 cases last week, the Canfield Healthcare nursing home on Canfield Road on Youngstown’s West Side had just two this week.

The facility had 44 patient cases and four staff cases last week in data reported on the Ohio Department of Health’s website. This week, the facility has one patient case and one staff case.

Fred Strattman, spokesman for Canfield Healthcare, said last week the facility created an isolation area for patients who have the virus. He said the facility also was treating aggressively virus patients with medications to reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes, to energize their immune system and to help them recover.

Meanwhile, the Windsor at Guardian Healthcare nursing home on Belmont Avenue on Youngstown’s North Side had 10 patient cases and three staff cases this week — the same number as last week.

Though the ODH listed a second Guardian Healthcare on its website, Melanie Amato, ODH spokesperson, and Dan Rowland, Windsor House spokesman, said there is just one.

As a county, Mahoning had seven facilities with at least three virus cases last week, but that number dropped to five facilities this week. Last week Mahoning County facilities had 96 infected patients and staff; this week the number dropped to 50.

Facilities in Mahoning and Trumbull counties continued to report low numbers of coronavirus cases this week.

Statewide, there was an increase in virus cases at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. There were 917 patient cases a week ago, but that rose to 947 this week. There were 547 staff cases a week ago, rising to 576 this week.

There was no change in the number of deaths at long-term facilities this week. Columbiana County remained at 52, Mahoning at 191 and Trumbull at 77.

There also were no changes in the number of inmates at Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg and Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown with the virus. Both reported having none.
