Man involved in cop dragging case arrested

Officer had road rash, bruises but no serious injuries

RAVENNA — A Streetsboro man who was the subject of an extensive law enforcement search after a North Jackson police officer was dragged during a traffic stop was arrested early Friday in Ravenna.

The officer injury occurred Wednesday in North Jackson. Nicholas Roman, 22, 9839 Meldon Drive, Streetsboro, was arrested at a home in the 300 block of East Highland Avenue.

Roman was arrested by members of the Akron and Youngstown divisions of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, the Ravenna Police Department and the Portage County Drug Unit.

A report from the U.S. Marshal’s service said upon entry, officers found Roman hiding in a bathtub and he did not obey officers’ commands. The news release states Roman will be held in the Portage County jail on outstanding warrants until he can be transferred to the Mahoning County jail to face charges of attempted murder and felonious assault.

During the traffic stop in the 2500 block of Salem-Warren Road (state Route 45) in North Jackson, Roman is accused of grabbing the arm of officer Tyler Vasco, and the officer was dragged as Roman’s vehicle took off, police said.

The episode occurred after Vasco had stopped Roman for a traffic violation.

Vasco then held on while Roman continued down the road for nearly a mile at a high speed, according to township police Chief Greg Taillon. During the trip, Roman tried to harm the officer by driving toward oncoming vehicles and driving close to mailboxes, Taillon said. Eventually the officer let go and fell to the road just south of Route 45 and Blatt Road. Vasco suffered road rash, cuts and bruises but no broken bones or series injuries, according to Taillon. He was released after being checked at a hospital.

“Day in and day out members of the law enforcement community work to keep their communities safe from people like this,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said. “Quick work by members of the task force and an outstanding partnership with the local agencies keep criminals like this from being on the run.”

Officers went to Streetsboro and located the vehicle involved and interviewed Roman’s girlfriend.

Roman also is charged with failure to comply with the orders of a police officer, according to court records. No court date had been set as of Friday morning in Austintown Area Court.
