Trumbull County adds death from COVID-19

One of the state’s 17 most recent deaths caused by COVID-19 reported Monday was in Trumbull County.

The number of deaths reported Monday marks an increase over deaths Sunday, when three people died from the disease, according to numbers provided by the Ohio Department of Health.

The state reported 778 new cases Monday, compared to an increase of 973 Sunday. Deaths statewide increased from 4,259 to 4,276, adding 17 new deaths to Monday reports.

Six new cases were reported in Mahoning County, increasing the amount to 2,901; deaths stayed at 272.

One new case in Trumbull County was reported, increasing the amount to 1,779, with one new death for a total of 126 in the county.

Three new cases were reported in Columbiana County, bringing the total amount of cases to 1,870; deaths in the county remained at 68.

Any increase of cases as a result of the long Labor Day weekend will not be apparent yet. Gov. Mike DeWine said previously the weekend could “determine what our fall is going to look like,” as he expressed concern people would gather in large groups to celebrate summer’s last hurrah.

The governor said health officials are reporting a sharp rise in cases among the 18- to 22-year-old age group as colleges are back in session. He said the concern isn’t about those students getting very sick, but their ability to spread the disease.

Starting today, K-12 schools will have to report COVID-19 cases to be included in a weekly reporting system.
