Salem woman places 2nd in contest

SALEM — A humble hero has emerged with a heart that beats for lonely seniors during the pandemic.

Sara Smith brings Salem and Youngstown honor as the Visiting Angels second-place finalist of a nationwide contest for Caregiver of the Year. She bested more than 5,000 in-home caregivers to win.

“Sara deserves this honor because she restores hope and helps with healing her clients emotionally, physically and spiritually,” said Susan Fregner, owner of Visiting Angels in Salem, who nominated her for the award. Visiting Angels is a national in-home care franchise.

“She is an extraordinary caregiver, a ray of sunshine to everyone who is fortunate to know her. Her positive attitude and smile are infectious. She’s generous, unselfish, thoughtful, sincere and thankful for all she has,” Fregner said.

The award was presented at the Visiting Angels office located at 1285 E. Pidgeon Road, Suite A, Salem. She also will receive a $2,500 check for her compassion for seniors.

Her work includes singing, reading scripture, playing games and engaging clients in meaningful and cheerful conversations. She often takes clients for lunch, dinner and ice cream, and helps them grocery shop.
