Police investigate fatal East Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — A man in his late 40s was found shot to death when police arrived at a home in the 300 block of Euclid Avenue at just after 10 p.m. Friday.

Police were called to the address for a shooting victim and found the man shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Youngstown Police Department and Mahoning County Coroner’s Office are investigating and ask anyone with information to call 330-742-8950 or the detective bureau at 330-742-8911.

The death marks the 20th homicide in the city this year — the same number recorded in Youngstown during all of 2019.

The most recent homicide before Friday was the shooting death of Jawaun Hurst, 20, on LaBelle Avenue on the South Side after a fight. He was found in a vacant lot near 54 LaBelle.

Friday’s killing happened the evening after federal officials announced a “Operation Red Zone,” which is being carried out in the city throughout the weekend in an effort to reduce gun crime.

The operation involves federal agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Drug Enforcement Administration; Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Marshals Service increasing their presence in the city.

The city will be a “Red Zone” for enforcement of federal laws that can produce long prison sentences for those possessing who are not allowed to possess them and will be a “Red Zone” for those “who otherwise use firearms in a violent crime or drug trafficking offense.”
