Mistrial declared in murder case

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge John Durkin sent the jury home and declared a mistrial Monday in the aggravated murder trial of a Campbell man accused of the 2018 shooting death of a Chaney High School graduate.

A court spokesperson said a new trial with a new jury selection will be Nov. 9 in Durkin’s court.

Myckle Hughes, 23, 576 Sixth St., Campbell, faces charges of murder, aggravated murder and aggravated robbery.

Hughes is accused of shooting and killing Chaney graduate Sean Bell, 18, on Oak Street Extension on Aug. 21, 2018. Police initially responded to the scene of a car accident but found Bell’s body with gunshot wounds inside the vehicle.

A ruling Sept. 1 by Durkin allowed defense attorneys Thomas Zena and Douglas Taylor to get a list of phone calls prosecutors intend to introduce as evidence at the trial.
