Local railroad project gets grant for $700K

STRUTHERS — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration awarded a $700,500 grant to an effort to rehabilitate 25 miles of rail line between Struthers and Signal.

The project will improve the line on the Ohio Rail Development Commission’s Youngstown and Southeastern Railroad Co. Mahoning Valley line. The line is located between Struthers and Signal — the latter is the location of the Columbiana County Port Authority’s rail terminal.

The project includes the installation of about 10,100 railroad ties as well as surfacing, switch renewal, bolt tightening and at-grade crossing improvements.
