Districts get connectivity grants

Mahoning Valley school districts received $2,725,908.23 in Broadband Ohio Connectivity grant awards.

These dollars will be used, in part, to ensure that students are connected to the school districts online, whether they are attending classes in their regular school buildings, are attending classes in buildings only a few days a week, or are fully online.

The money was obtained from CARES Act funds, according to the Ohio Department of Education.

ODE, in collaboration with Broadband Ohio, provided Ohio schools and educational service centers with the opportunity to apply for these funds. The grants were reviewed and awardees were notified on Sept. 2.

The state awarded approximately $50 million in Broadband Connectivity grants.

Mahoning county schools received $1,700,027.31, with Horizon Science Academy and Youngstown city schools each receiving more than $151,000 each. In Trumbull, Girard and Warren schools each received more than $151,000.

Youngstown schools will be using its award to pay for hot spots and internet connectivity that weren’t covered by funds the district received from non-profit organizations, according to district officials.
