Accused killer held without bond

Neighbors and loved ones set up a memorial for Rowan Sweeney, 4, who was killed Monday morning in a shooting at 111 Perry St., Struthers. The suspect, Kimonie Bryant, was in municipal court Wednesday and entered no plea to aggravated murder.

STRUTHERS — A criminal complaint filed in Struthers Municipal Court alleges that Kimonie Bryant, 24, the suspect in Monday shootings that left a 4-year-old boy dead, aimed a gun at the child and fired two shots at the top of his head.

His mother, Alexis Schneider, covered the boy, Rowan Sweeney, and begged the gunman who had entered the 111 Perry St. house not to shoot him, the complaint states.

During an initial appearance Wednesday afternoon before municipal Judge Dominic Leone on an aggravated murder charge, Bryant entered no plea and asked the court to set a “reasonable bail,” which was denied.

Bryant is at the Mahoning County jail and was arraigned via video.

He will be appointed an attorney.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Oct. 2, although a Mahoning County grand jury may consider the case before then.

‘MOST INNOCENT’

Struthers Law Director John Zomoida told the court the shooting involved “the most innocent of victims,” referring to Rowan. The state asked that bond not be set.

Zomoida had no further comment about the investigation and complaint Wednesday.

On Monday about 8 p.m., Bryant turned himself in to the U.S. Marshals Service, roughly 18 hours after he is accused of barging into the house and shooting four adults, including Schneider, of Struthers; Cassandra Marsicola, 20, of Campbell; Yarnell Green Jr., 30, of Youngstown; and Andre McCoy Jr., 20, of Youngstown.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took possession of McCoy’s cellphone.

TEXT MESSAGES

A text message sent to McCoy’s number was later determined to be from Bryant, the complaint states.

It read: “Sure he ain’t got one.”

Seconds later, McCoy’s phone responded with: “positive just told me how somebody stole it.”

Bryant’s text then read: “Yo girl car right in front,” with McCoy responding “yea.”

McCoy then sent: “come up steps open door,” the complaint states.

A photo lineup containing Bryant’s photograph was presented to Marsicola at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, and Marsicola picked Bryant as the gunman, the complaint states.

Marsicola had called 911 on Monday, describing the shooting as happening very fast and telling dispatchers that two women were shot and a child was dead.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no update was provided on the victims’ conditions.

On Monday, McCoy and Green were listed in critical condition with Marsicola and Schneider listed as stable.

Families of the victims did not attend Wednesday’s court appearance.
