Nursing home COVID cases fall in Mahoning County

Mahoning County long-term care facilities such as nursing homes saw a sizable drop in coronavirus cases — 11 patient cases and four staff cases this week compared with 14 patient cases and 10 staff cases last week.

But two Columbiana County long-term care facilities joined this week’s list of facilities with three or more coronavirus cases among patients and / or staff. They are Whispering Pines nursing home in Columbiana and Valley Oaks nursing home in East Liverpool.

Trumbull County has no facilities with three or more cases, and Mahoning County has two facilities with that many.

Across the state, long-term-care facility patient cases rose from 740 last week to 803 this week, and staff cases rose from 435 to 489 this week.

Mahoning County reported an increase of two deaths at long-term care facilities this week — from 172 last week to 174 this week.

Trumbull County saw an increase of three deaths at such facilities — 62 compared to 59 last week. Columbiana remained at 32.

Franklin County has had the most coronavirus deaths in the state’s long-term care facilities at 357, up five from last week; second is Cuyahoga County at 244; Lucas County is third at 194; Mahoning County fourth at 174; Summit County fifth at 156; Hamilton sixth at 135; Stark seventh at 102; and Trumbull eighth at 62.

Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg saw an increase this week in coronavirus cases, rising from 11 last week to 16 this week. The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown saw a sizeable decrease, falling from 12 inmate cases last week to two this week.

MAHONING COUNTY

l Inn at Poland Way assisted living – 3 patients and 0 staff, total of 3 patients and 0 staff.

l Park Vista nursing home in Youngstown – 5 patients and 0 staff, total of 29 patients and 11 staff.

TRUMBULL COUNTY

l No Trumbull County nursing home or assisted living facility had at least three patient and or staff cases for the second week in a row.

COLUMBIANA COUNTY

l Auburn Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation nursing home in Salem – 4 patients and 0 staff, total of 4 patients and 0 staff.

l Valley Oaks Care Center nursing home in East Liverpool, 1 patient case and 2 staff cases, total of 1 patient case and 2 staff cases.

l Whispering Pines Village nursing home in Columbiana, 6 patients and 6 staff, total of 6 patients and 6 staff.
