Mother left 1-year-old home alone, police say

AUSTINTOWN — A woman is accused of leaving her 1-year-old unattended for almost two hours so she could play “Pokemon Go,” a mobile game that requires the player to be in certain locations.

Brittni Diane Louise Furr, 21, 131 N. Kimberly Ave., is facing a charge of child endangering. She was booked into the Mahoning County jail and has since been released, according to jail records.

A concerned neighbor called police after hearing a child screaming repeatedly during the week, according to a police report. Police went to Furr’s apartment about 9:30 p.m. Saturday and heard the child. When they knocked on the door, there was no answer.

Witnesses told police they saw Furr and a man leave the apartment about 8 p.m. that night. They also said they had heard Furr yelling “shut up” when the child was screaming earlier.

After maintenance staff unlocked the door for police, they found the 1-year-old alone in a playpen. He had a soiled diaper and had vomited, the report states.

Furr and the man returned about 10 p.m. She told police she had been outside for about 15 minutes playing “Pokemon Go.” When police told her she had been gone longer than an hour and a half, Furr said she “lost track of time.”

Furr’s bond was set at $1,250. Custody of the child was given to its grandmother, according to the police report.
