Market’s youngest entrepreneur

13-year-old sells masks in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — One of the 22 vendors on hand Monday night at Austintown Township Park is the youngest one to sell at the farmers market.

Masks By Sadie, the dream of Sadie Ohl, 13, of Boardman, had a good first night out, selling enough masks to make it worth returning next week.

Sadie, 13, daughter of Bob and Audrey Ohl of Boardman, is in the eighth grade at Boardman Glenwood Junior High School. She learned the art of sewing from her grandmother, Kathy Parker, then learned how to put the masks together from a friend.

“She has wanted to have a business of her own since she was 3,” Audrey said. “She started making the masks at home during the stay-at-home order and has now turned it into a business.”

Sadie started by purchasing material of various designs and began making the custom masks. The sales Monday night were so good, she said she will have to buy more material and will be sewing all week.

“This was my first time out and business is great,” Sadie said. “I’ll be back next week.”

Besides being a vendor at the farmers market, Sadie also has an online venture called “Refashioned–closet” on Instagram. She takes used clothing and refashions it into a new creation. She now is including masks that go with each outfit.

As for profits from the market and the online sales, Sadie said she will be reinvesting some back into her business by buying more material. Some of the profits will be put away for college.

“I want to be a lawyer,” she said.

For now Sadie will have to be content selling her $7 masks and $8 bandeau masks. Austintown Farmers Market director Shannon Lehn said it is great to have someone like Sadie in the weekly market.

“She is the youngest vendor we have ever had,” Lehn said. “We always want to encourage entrepreneurship among our youth.”
