YOUNGSTOWN — The victim of an early Friday morning shooting has been identified by the Mahoning County Coroner’s office.

Jawaun Hurst, 20, died at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital early Friday after being shot in the torso around 12:50 a.m. on La Belle Avenue on the South Side.

A 911 caller reported a fight. Responding officers found Hurst, who had been shot in a vacant lot near 54 LaBelle. He was taken to the hospital.

The Youngstown Police Department is asking anyone with information to call the Youngstown Police Department at 330-742-8950 or the detective division at 330-742-8911.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy. If the death is ruled a homicide, it would be Youngstown’s 19th of 2020. In all of 2019, 20 homicides occurred.

About three hours later, at 4 a.m. Friday, a man was taken to the hospital after being rescued from the roof of a house fire in the 700 block of Delaware Avenue on the North Side.

Another adult and an infant escaped without injuries, according to a fire report.
