YOUNGSTOWN -- A 34-year-old Liberty man linked to an early June high-speed chase through the north and east sides of the city was arraigned in municipal court Wednesday.
Jerome Turner, 34, of 3470 Hadley Ave., Liberty, was arrested by U.S. marshals the day before on a warrant for a failure to comply charge.
He pleaded not guilty to the felony charge in a video arraignment. Turner will have a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Judge Carla J. Baldwin.
Turner was picked up on a warrant by marshals at a home in the 100 block of Brooklyn Avenue at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, a Youngstown police report states. The case stems from a June 2 incident in which police were called to a fight involving a gun in an apartment in the 1500 block of Elm Street. As police were arriving at the fight call, they noticed a man running to a 2006 black Saturn Vue.
Police pursued the vehicle, which ran two stop signals at the intersections of Elm and Broadway and Elm and Madison onto the eastbound ramp of the Madison Avenue Expressway. The chase continued as the Saturn turned into the eastbound lane of Oak Street, but the report states as the vehicles entered a business district, officers decided to suspend the chase for safety reasons.
The report states speeds were in the 60 to 70 mph range.
Later that day, Liberty police spotted the Saturn in the parking lot of the Aldi market on Belmont Avenue. Youngstown police asked that the vehicle be towed and issued a warrant for its owner.
Court records show Turner remains in custody pending the posting of a $9,500 bond.
