Fifth Avenue project moves full steam ahead
YOUNGSTOWN — Progress continues on the Fifth Avenue improvement project, part of a larger $31 million infrastructure revitalization of downtown Youngstown and its environs.
As YSU students begin a new semester soon, they will have to take a new route to campus from the south as the improvements will take 12 months to complete, according to Tony Pannunzio of general contractor Parella-Pannunzio Inc. Pannunzio said about a dozen workers were on his crew Thursday.
The city hired Austintown-based Parella-Pannunzio Inc. in May at $6.9 million, more than $1.5 million under the estimate, for the Fifth Avenue improvement
project.
The project between West Federal Street and Eastbound Service Road is the first phase of the SMART2 (Strategic and Sustainable, Medical and Manufacturing, Academic and Arts, Residential and Recreation and Technology and Training) Network project.
The city received a $10.85 million federal grant to pay for the project.
