Feds indict city man in string of robberies

YOUNGSTOWN — A federal grand jury has returned a 10-count indictment charging Terron L. Jones, 21, with five counts of interference with commerce by means of robbery, and other offenses in an alleged two-week robbery spree.

Jones also was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury in July on many of the same crimes, meaning the Mahoning County case most likely will be dismissed in favor of the federal case.

In addition to the four robberies, Jones was indicted federally on four counts of using or carrying, and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and one count of using or carrying, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

Law enforcement police reports have indicated that Jones robbed the Boardman Speedway, 649 E. Midlothian Blvd., on May 22; the Youngstown Check-n-Go, 1739 Wilson Ave., on May 23; the Youngstown Circle K, 1821 Mahoning Ave., on May 29; and the Youngstown Dollar General, 1370 Belmont Ave., on June 1.

Jones committed many of the crimes while wearing an Ohio University Bobcats sweatshirt, according to police reports.

Jones’ federal indictment states that on or about May 23, Jones used, carried and discharged a firearm.

That is a reference to what Youngstown police said happened at the Check-n-Go on Wilson Avenue. Police said while Jones was robbing the Check-n-Go, a store employee gave Jones cash but then ducked behind the counter and got his gun, and the two exchanged gunfire. No one apparently was injured, and Jones ran.
