Domain change causes website snafu

WARREN — A change in the domain name of the Trumbull County Board of Elections resulted in people not being able to access the site over the weekend.

When someone tried to access the Trumbull County Board of Elections website, they received a message that read “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead. Firefox detected a potential security threat and did not continue to www.boe.co.trumbull.oh.us. If you visit this site, attackers could try to steal information like your passwords, emails, or credit card details.”

Stephanie Penrose, director of the board of elections, said the county is in the process of switching over from the www.boe.co.trumbull.oh.us/ domain name to one ending in .gov. Penrose said the change was mandated by Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose because the .gov domain name is more secure.

She said all 88 counties eventually will start using the new domain name and she could not understand why the changeover was taking so long. She said she hopes the issue is resolved by Monday.

The Mahoning County Board of Elections already is using the .gov domain name.

Starting at $3.23/week.
