Canfield Twp. motel sold at local auction

CANFIELD — A Canfield Township motel that was previously cited for fire violations has been sold at auction.

Colonial Motel, 7815 W. Akron Canfield Road, was sold Monday for $176,000, said Ron Roman of George Roman Auctioneers.

He said there were eight registered bidders, and the buyer has asked to keep its name private until the transaction is completed, which Roman said should be within two to three weeks.

The auction was through the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, Roman said.

In February, representatives of the Cardinal Joint Fire District and the motel met and agreed to a preliminary injunction that closed the motel so repairs could be completed.

There were 144 violations, with 21 considered “major” or “life-threatening,” involving fire and electrical concerns.

Matt Rarick, deputy chief of the fire district, previously explained that the court order was to remove people “living” at the motel until the repairs were completed.

In May 2016, a land contract was set in place listing Arthur S. and Alice M. Klein of Canfield and Prime Suites LLC of Fairlawn as owners of the motel.

The Kleins took over when owner Todd M. Cleavenger was incarcerated.

The Mahoning County Auditor values the property at $240,000.
