WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday

PRESENT: John Saganich, Donna Shields, Jody Klase, Thomas Hannon and Joseph Cappuzzello

The board:

l Heard from Superintendent Kevin O’Connell that a committee of six parents, four teachers, himself and Saganich called the Restart Committee is meeting in July to prepare for the 2020-21 school year. He said plans are to wait to hear what guidelines are provided by Gov. Mike DeWine on opening schools. O’Connell said he and other superintendents meet each Wednesday with Trumbull County Combined Health District officials;

l Heard from O’Connell that more than 300 surveys have been returned about what families thought went well and what needs improved upon during the time schools were closed. There has been discussion on a blended learning model with online and in-person learning;

l Heard from O’Connell that the former Roosevelt School property has not been sold but has been surveyed with plans to put it up for sale. The property is no longer used after a new elementary school was constructed near the high school;

l Heard from O’Connell the annual father-son golf outing fundraiser will be July 25. Last year’s event raised $1,500 for Akron Children’s Hospital. He said this year’s goal is to raise $1,500 for the Cleveland Clinic;

l Reported the student handbook has been updated making it easier for parents and students to find information on hazing, bullying and discipline;

l Heard from O’Connell plans for summer school for second and third graders will be done on a different format using Google Classroom. The United Way will be asked to help with a planned after-school program since it has had many programs in schools.
